Retirement isn’t what it used to be, and neither is the cost of it.
We’re living longer, spending more, and expecting better quality of life in later years. But that begs the question: how much do you actually need to retire comfortably in the UK?
The short answer: it depends.
The better answer: let’s break it down.

What Does a “Comfortable” Retirement Actually Mean?
A comfortable retirement means having enough money to live the life you want without financial stress. That might be holidays and hobbies for some, or simply being able to keep the heating on and help the grandkids.
The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) has put some figures around this based on three lifestyle standards:
- Minimum lifestyle – £13,400 a year for a single person
- Moderate lifestyle – £31,700 a year for a single person
- Comfortable lifestyle – £43,900 a year for a single person
For couples, the numbers are slightly higher at around £59,000 a year for a comfortable lifestyle.
Of course, these are national averages. What’s comfortable for one person might feel tight for another.
| PLSA retirement living standards | One person household (annual) | Two person household (annual) | What standard of living could you have? | ||
| Outside London | London | Outside London | London | ||
| Minimum | £13,400 | £15,800 | £31,700 | £33,000 | Covers all your needs, with some left over for fun |
| Moderate | £21,600 | £24,800 | £43,900 | £45,500 | More financial security and flexibility |
| Comfortable | £43,900 | £45,500 | £60,600 | £62,700 | More financial freedom and some luxuries |

What Will That Cost You?
Here’s where it gets real.
To generate £43,900 per year in retirement (for life), you’ll need a significant pension pot. Assuming you qualify for the full state pension (£11,973 per year), that still leaves a gap of nearly £32,000 a year.
To produce that income sustainably, you’d need approximately £500,000–£700,000 in pensions or investments, depending on your withdrawal strategy, age, and market performance.
Got a £700k pension pot? That could put you on track for a very comfortable retirement, but it’s still worth checking if it’s working as hard as it can.
The Pensions Policy Institute has modelled examples of the lifestyle you could afford in retirement depending on your income, savings, and household setup. We’ve put the link at the bottom of the blog, it’s worth checking them out when you’re done.

What About a Luxury Retirement?
Some people want more than comfort. Maybe you want to travel more, gift more to your family, or simply enjoy the finer things in life. If so, you’re looking at a “luxury retirement income”, and that could mean needing over £70,000–£80,000+ a year.
That might require a seven-figure retirement pot or other income sources such as property, business income, or investments.
Of course, what “luxury” looks like is personal. For some, it’s five-star holidays and a second home, for others, it’s helping grandchildren onto the property ladder or having the freedom to say yes to life without thinking twice. Whatever it means to you, the key is knowing what it’ll take and how to get there.
And here’s the truth: generic figures are helpful, but they don’t replace a real plan. Everyone’s circumstances are different, be it housing, health, family, spending habits, and all of these things and more matter.
You might:
- Have no mortgage and spend less
- Need to support others or have health costs
- Want to retire early or work part-time for a few years
Without a proper look at your goals, pensions, assets, and income options, you’re just guessing.

What If You’re Not on Track?
You’re not alone. Many people aren’t sure how much they’ve got, let alone whether it’s enough. But it’s never too early, or too late, to start planning.
A retirement plan helps you:
- Know where you stand
- Spot gaps in your savings
- Make better use of tax allowances
- Understand how long your money will last
- Build confidence in your financial future
Retirement isn’t about hitting a magic number, it’s about knowing what’s right for you.
Whatever your version of “comfortable” looks like, the best time to start planning is today.
